Practice the Pause

September 2nd, 2021
Ade,

As we face challenges of any shape or size, it is easy to forget a simple and powerful piece of the puzzle: the pause. By pausing when the impulse reaction might be to jump in with all guns blazing, we give ourselves space to shift perspective and to choose our response. This is crucial. As Frankl wrote:

Between stimulus and response, there is space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
Viktor E. Frankl

How many times have you misread something and jumped to a false conclusion?  In business, this is not only dangerous for your well-being but also your career.  Speak when you are angry and you’ll make the best speech you’ll ever regret.

We all make judgements and assumptions based on our core fears, our protective armour raised as we scan for danger. This is our primal ‘fight or flight’ response but we can become awake and aware enough to stop, reflect and ultimately work with not from our reactions. It takes a little time to drop shields and blinkers and enter a different state – a state of choice and discernment. In this state of equanimity and composure, we can grow taller than our fears.

We can respond rather than react

Some people get into the habit of taking 5 deep breaths before speaking. Some pause before sending emails that they’ve drafted when cross, often giving perspective a chance to settle overnight. The pause is simple. it is powerful and enables growth and freedom.

  • Doubt? Pause.
  • Anger? Pause.
  • Tired? Pause.
  • Stressed? Pause.

Pause and make room for personal and business wisdom of a quieter and more considered kind to come through. It will empower you and those around you.
